Kazi Nazrul Islam was a multi-talented genius of Bengali literature and a symbol of rebellion. He was not only a poet but also a composer, musician, novelist, playwright, journalist, and soldier. Through his works, he strongly opposed oppression, injustice, and exploitation in society. Nazrul was born on May 24, 1899, in Churulia, a village in West Bengal, India. His father, Kazi Fakir Ahmed, was the imam of a local mosque, and his mother, Zahida Khatun, was a pious woman. Due to financial hardship, Nazrul’s childhood was full of struggles.

Early Life:

Nazrul received his early education in a village madrasa, where he studied religious scriptures. He later joined a local folk singing group called Leto, which nurtured his musical talent. However, financial challenges forced him to leave school. In 1917, he joined the Indian Army, which greatly influenced his revolutionary spirit and creative outlook.

Literary Contributions:

Nazrul’s literary works reflect rebellion, love, equality, and humanity. His iconic poem ‘Bidrohi’ (The Rebel), published in 1922, established him as the Rebel Poet. His notable books include ‘Agni-Bina’, ‘Vanger Gan’, ‘Dolonchapa’, and ‘Chhayanat’.

In his works, he advocated for the rights of the oppressed and depicted the cultural richness of Bengali Muslims. His novels, such as ‘Mrittukhudha’ and ‘Bandhanhara’, showcase his diverse literary talent.

Nazrul’s Music:

Kazi Nazrul Islam revolutionized Bengali music by composing and writing nearly 4,000 songs, now known as ‘Nazrul Geeti’. His songs beautifully blend themes of love, nature, humanity, and rebellion. Iconic compositions like ‘Karar Oi Louho Kopat’ and ‘Durgo Giri Kantar Moru’ are shining examples of his musical genius.

Political and Social Influence:

His literary works and music were powerful inspirations during the Indian independence movement. He strongly advocated religious harmony and social equality in his writings.

Later Life:

In 1942, Nazrul fell ill with a rare disease that silenced his creative voice. In 1972, after the independence of Bangladesh, he was brought to Dhaka and honored as the National Poet of Bangladesh. He passed away on August 29, 1976, in Dhaka.
