Biography: Rabindranath Tagore

Rabindranath Tagore is an unforgettable name in the history of Bengali literature and culture. He was born on May 7, 1861, in the Jorasanko Thakur Bari in Kolkata, India. His father, Maharshi Debendranath Tagore, was a prominent leader of the Brahmo Samaj, and his mother, Sarada Sundari Devi, was a homemaker. Through his literary genius, he captivated not just Bengal but the entire world.

Education:

Rabindranath was not very enthusiastic about formal education. He initially studied at home and later went to England to study law, though he left it incomplete and returned to India. His extensive knowledge is reflected in his works of literature, philosophy, music, and art.

Literary Contributions:

Rabindranath enriched almost every genre of Bengali literature. His poetry, short stories, novels, essays, and lyrical songs remain unparalleled. In 1913, he won the Nobel Prize for Literature for his collection of poems, "Gitanjali," which was the first international recognition for Bengali literature. His notable works include "The Home and the World," "Gora," "Chokher Bali," "Shesher Kobita," and "Jogajog."

Music and Painting:

Tagore composed more than 2,000 songs, popularly known as "Rabindra Sangeet." These songs blend themes of love, nature, and spirituality. At the age of over 60, he started painting, and his artworks displayed a unique touch of abstraction.

Contributions to Society and Education:

In 1901, he established "Shantiniketan" in Birbhum, West Bengal, which later transformed into the Visva-Bharati University. Tagore introduced a new model of education that emphasized freedom of thought and creativity among students.

Role in the Freedom Movement:

He protested against British rule and renounced his "Knighthood" title in 1919 as a protest against the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
